Misery and Despair (Snippet Sunday 7.24.16)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

With it being a Camp NaNo month and me taking another plunge into the madness to try to finish this book, I am going to switch back to sharing from Fated to Darkness for July. Call it my motivation to keep going in writing. Come August, I will switch back to sharing from Breaking Point since I left so many of you hanging on a cliffhanger wanting more.

Previously on Sunday Snippets: Four year old Heather had been kidnapped from her home by a woman clad in black and whisked off to another realm where she found her kidnapper wanted her to be her Heir. But not just any Heir. After being locked up and put through a ritual that has changed her and her life forever — though she does not yet know it — she has found herself in a small bare essential room with a tiny bathroom, and her new mentor has instructed her to clean herself up and be ready in ten minutes. Having talked of what Ciara finally wants of her, she has now gone through three trying lessons under her mentor’s thumb, and has since passed out. Since then Ciara has finally begun to explain what it is she really wants of Heather, and now Heather has found herself surprisingly at home.

Picking up right where I left off in last week’s snippet.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

So, she glared furiously at Heather, hiding the proud, sadistic thoughts she just had. “You will pay for that defiance, Heir,” she hissed, poison dripping from her words.

Heather opened her mouth to retort back, still running off the magic only to stop as Ciara vanished. The swirl of mist still baffled her on how it worked, for when it dissipated, the Dark One was nowhere to be seen once more.

Out of the anger, Heather lashed out again, pounding on her bed with her fist as she started to half scream and sob at the same time. She felt like she was breaking inside, losing sight of all she had held dear to herself. These secrets, these lies, this pain and anger… It was already eating at her and she collapsed back onto the bed, burying her head into her pillow as she broke down and sobbed loudly.

The magic high faded away soon, leaving her nothing but misery and despair. She almost wanted it back, wanted the anger back to numb the pain. It was easier to manage than the agony she was in emotionally and mentally. The bracelet pricked at her wrist repeatedly now but she was ignoring it this time as she continued to cry.

Her small, shaking hand reached out desperately and sought out the teddy bear for some false comfort, rolling over and curling up with it tight against her chest as she hugged it. The tears still streamed down her face as she hiccupped and sobbed uncontrollably.

Poor girl… Anyone else wish to feed Ciara to the wolves yet? LOL.

Fated to Darkness Cover Final

This story is not yet on Wattpad because it is my baby that I hope to publish one day, and if no one will publish me, I am self publishing. But it’s also not on Wattpad because it’s in first draft phases yet. So there will be no “if you wish to read more…”

However! If you wish to read anything else that I do have finished, you can hop on over to  my profile on Wattpad and check out what I have to offer. I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Comments are greatly appreciated, as are the reads.

And if you’re looking for some other great snippets of fellow authors,
hop on over to Facebook and check out Snippet Sunday!

    • Really? You’re almost in tears? Well… I didn’t think it was that heart wrenching, but I’m glad it’s getting that strong a reaction from you! Stuffed animals always give some comfort to children, hopefully it will.

      Thanks for reading, Iris! :)

  1. Aw. I’m with Iris. I feel so bad for her here, even more than when she is with Ciara and Ciara is actively torturing her. There’s more emotion in this and that makes it more intense than just physical pain.

    • Wait, did I just hear P.T. say I might have almost brought her to tears? I think you two might have made my night. I’m glad the scene comes across so strongly.

      Thanks for reading, P.T.! :)

    • LOL. Too bad her own wolfhounds won’t tear her to bits. XD I’m so thrilled everyone is loving this scene because of the emotion to it. I’m glad you like the teddy bear touch, every girl needs their stuffed teddy at that age.

      Thanks for reading, Elizabeth! :)
