Something Alluring (Snippet Sunday 7.17.16)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

With it being a Camp NaNo month and me taking another plunge into the madness to try to finish this book, I am going to switch back to sharing from Fated to Darkness for July. Call it my motivation to keep going in writing. Come August, I will switch back to sharing from Breaking Point since I left so many of you hanging on a cliffhanger wanting more.

Previously on Sunday Snippets: Four year old Heather had been kidnapped from her home by a woman clad in black and whisked off to another realm where she found her kidnapper wanted her to be her Heir. But not just any Heir. After being locked up and put through a ritual that has changed her and her life forever — though she does not yet know it — she has found herself in a small bare essential room with a tiny bathroom, and her new mentor has instructed her to clean herself up and be ready in ten minutes. Having talked of what Ciara finally wants of her, she has now gone through three trying lessons under her mentor’s thumb, and has since passed out. Since then Ciara has finally begun to explain what it is she really wants of Heather, and now Heather has found herself surprisingly at home.

Picking up right where I left off in last week’s snippet.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

It struck out at the older witch, slamming into her with a curse Heather didn’t even know she could do. It acted all on instinct, almost completely on its own accord. Heather was glaring almost murderously at her as she stumbled a bit from the curse’s impact. The look of hatred on her face was so out of place for her innocent features.

The magic pulsed and thrummed through Heather’s body strongly, making her shiver under the cold, wicked, and powerful adrenaline rush it brought her. It scared her, and it also excited her. That power, it was so strong. For the first time, she noticed something else to it.

Something…alluring.

That darkened nature to it pulled her in and held her tight, feeding off her anger and emotions. The two were working together, fueling each other. The dark magic fueled Heather’s anger and hatred, and those strong emotions fueled the magic into acting on its own. She didn’t know how to control what it was prompting her to do, giving in to some unknown instinct and running with what it was urging her to do.

Cold trickles ran through her veins and the intensity of the magic, even though she was weakened, grabbed hold of that alluring factor. The sheer power to it tempted her into exploring it further. Her breathing had suddenly come heavier, chest rising and falling in her anger. Her cold eyes hadn’t left the older witch, the two of them having a stare down contest.

Ciara sneered at the child, shocked and also a little proud. She had just created her first curse. Sure, she may not have known what she had done, but those strong emotions in her fueled it. This sudden act proved how well the magic had taken to her, how easily it could manipulate Heather into listening to it and falling to it. It had latched onto her like a suction cup, refusing to let go and it would pull her down, down, down into the depths of her darkness.

She had made the right choice in an Heir finally, and while she wanted to push her right now to get her to react more with it, she knew she could not. She had to let her despair now, to break further once the magic high faded away.

She would just have to hope this sudden defiance didn’t give the child a new edge, for now.

Oooooh, craaaaap.

Fated to Darkness Cover Final

This story is not yet on Wattpad because it is my baby that I hope to publish one day, and if no one will publish me, I am self publishing. But it’s also not on Wattpad because it’s in first draft phases yet. So there will be no “if you wish to read more…”

However! If you wish to read anything else that I do have finished, you can hop on over to  my profile on Wattpad and check out what I have to offer. I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Comments are greatly appreciated, as are the reads.
