Happy Halloween, folks! A Blessed Samhain and a trickster Devil’s Nite, as well! It’s the best time of the year in terms of Halloween and fall colors, and since Halloween is my favorite time of the year, for the month of October I’m going to be sharing from a new Halloween themed paranormal short story of mine. Embermyst is included in Victory Tales Press’ newest anthology release for the Halloween season, Paranormal Pleasures, which is out for sale in eBook and paperback format! It is also my first ever publication! Hooray!

This week’s snippet picks up right where I left off in last week’s snippet, and this is also the final snippet I will be sharing from Embermyst. I’m switching to something different next month. We left off with Death asking Morticia what it is she feels toward him.

Now for the fifth and final peek at Embermyst

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

As he leaned closer, she shivered and her eyes fluttered a second, the searing orange burning brighter with excitement. “I feel…this otherworldly connection. A chill, but not the chill I would expect from Death’s presence. Instead of this wave of despair it feels like crackling lightning sparking along my limbs, jump starting my heart. It almost…feels like I belong, like I have come home.”

Death smiled more, tracing his finger down the side of her face. “You just put to words what I could not explain within myself.”

She turned her gaze to him. Her eyes were windows of awe and surprise for only a moment before she seemed torn by something. She looked down, setting the amulet amongst her skirts, then reached up to finger a chain hanging around her neck. The charm strung through it was buried between the crevice of her breast.

“What is it, Morticia?” he asked with concern at her sudden change. She looked seemingly…regretful.

“I was engaged, Death.”

~*~*~*~

And the bombshell falls… Well that could be a slight problem for this budding relationship! I wonder how Death and Morticia will get past this hitch, and if you want to find out, you’re just gonna have to read the full story.

He pulled his hand back from her face, but not before he brushed her silky black hair out of her face with a lover’s touch. “I do not know,” he admitted softly. “Do you know there is a rumor among the Gods? A legend so to speak.”

“What kind of legend?”

“It states that for all the Gods and Goddesses there is but one mortal companion who is their other half. One soul among them all that once found, and acquainted with, you are bound to for eternity. They say the mortal ascends to divinity and immortality, becoming a God or Goddess themselves. It is believed no divine being is truly whole with eternal life until they have found their Bond Mate.”

She studied him. “And you believe I am that mortal?”

“Do you have any other explanation for this feeling?” he asked, rubbing his bony thumb over her thigh. He wished he could actually feel the soft fabric beneath his fingers, wished he could feel her smooth and flawless skin. That too was another earthly charm lost on him. “Do you feel it too?”

“I do…” Her voice was a breath of a whisper.

“What do you feel?”

~*~*~*~

Yes, what does Morticia feel in regards to Death? Legends can be such tricky things, too.

For a couple months — August and September I’m thinking — I am switching back to sharing from my adventure novel, Breaking Point. In October I might switch back to Fated to Darkness as I hope to have the first draft finished by then. (Yes, finished. I can hardly believe I’m saying that.) Should that happen, I’ll be posting to celebrate completing my first ever novel manuscript. Until then, enjoy more horses and mysterious bad guys!

Previously on Sunday Snippets: Our main character, who has yet to be named, has taken a ride through the forest on her horse Midnight, and has found herself racing a buck through the foliage. Midnight and his rider have veered off the path somewhere and have now found themselves in a uncharted part of the forest they have never seen before. They have run into a band of armed riders who seem threatening, and are surrounded now. After making a run for it, my MC was knocked out and both her and her horse were captured.

Picking up right where I left off from last week’s snippet.

I pounded on the glass, yelling his name over and over. As much as I hated to say it, I hoped the four men on horseback would get a rope around Midnight soon. At least then I wouldn’t have to worry about my horse hurting himself. Of course, there was always the possibility of them hurting him, but my gut told me they weren’t here to hurt either of us. And I wasn’t stupid enough to ignore my gut.

Midnight bucked, reared, kicked, and screamed as I continued to watch in agony. My nose was pressed tight up against the glass and my nails bit into my palms as I pounded on the glass. Just as the men were about to get a rope around him, he would spin out of their reach. My chest was in knots as I prayed silently he wouldn’t get hurt. I couldn’t bear to see my baby hurt.

The seconds ticked by into minutes, each one more painful than the last. My anxiety and fear mounted with the minutes, I was almost too afraid to breathe. Small beads of sweat had started to roll down my hairline and I could feel my limbs shaking. I couldn’t stop the terror from gripping me, and my voice was going hoarse from yelling to my horse.

Then Midnight stumbled.

I saw it before it happened. The jerk of his left hind hoof as he reared: the smallest movement that set him off balance, threatening to fall over backwards.

An action that would surely snap his neck when he landed.

~*~*~*~

I can’t watch! *Covers face* And I think that is going to leave you guys on a cliffhanger! I know, I’m evil, we’ve established this already. LOL. Next month I’ll be switching off to something else, not sure what yet though.

I bolted out of bed and made a beeline for the window. “Midnight!” I screamed, hoping like all hell my horse would hear my voice and come towards me. I just needed to see that he was alright.

Upon reaching the window, I banged my head against the glass in my haste, causing the ache to turn to another severe pounding, but I hardly paid it any mind. The panic of seeing my horse was all that I could think of at the moment. When I looked out the window, everything was broken up into parts set by thick black lines. My focus zoned in on the black lines only to be dismayed by the sight of iron bars surrounding the glass window on the outside.

I frowned. Well, if I had any doubts of what happened, they were certainly all up in smoke now. I had definitely been kidnapped and these guys meant business.

Another yell and scream from my horse brought my attention back to spotting him. In the center of a yard were four guys on horseback with lassos racing after and trying to corner poor Midnight as he bucked and reared in fright. Even with the distance between us I could see the whites of Midnight’s eyes as they rolled back into his head. I was suddenly very afraid my horse was going to get himself hurt. Or worse.

~*~*~*~

Poor, Midnight. Must be so scared…

It took minutes for the room to stand still and I was able to open my eyes again. I glanced around me in a panic, wondering where I was. I was sitting on an uncomfortable cot in a small cottage with nothing more than the cot, a table with two chairs, and a bench with some changes of clothes on it. There was one window to the left of me and a door directly in front of me. My eyes grazed over the window, the bring sunlight hurting the constant ache in my head.

Then my eyes latched onto the door. My ticket out of here.

My body screamed to make a run for that door and out of here, but something was holding me back. A nagging, reminding thought plagued me but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was.

“Get that horse!”

My head shot back to the window as I picked up the demanding voice followed by a shrill cry from a horse in serious fright. A dead chill settled in my gut as I recognized the cry.

It belonged to my dear Midnight.

~*~*~*~

Guess it wasn’t part of the dream after all.

Skipping ahead a few chapters from last week’s snippet. My MC is now stuck in what could be considered a tiny cabin, and she is whacking up from the drug that knocked her out, believing she was dreaming the whole experience of the kidnapping.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

~*~*~*~

My mind flashed back to one of the final scenes of the dream. The gun shot going off and the pain of something piercing the skin on my neck.

Then my horse’s scream ringing out loud and clear as if it was just right outside…

My dreamland came crashing down on me hard as I opened my eyes suddenly. The sound of my horse clearing away the rest of the fogginess of whatever drug they had used on me. I sat up in bed too quickly, the room spinning around me. A pounding headache sank in. It felt like my skull was splitting open and my eyes would bulge out of my head.

I grabbed my head with both hands, forcing the room to stop doing cart wheels around me. Squeezing my eyes shut tight, I moaned in pain. Every ounce of my body screamed in protest to my sudden movements. My muscles felt like lead as I tried to work the drug out of them.

In all honesty, I felt like I had been hit by a train.

~*~*~*~

So was Midnight’s scream reality or part of the dream?

Midnight screamed in fury as he met a wall of riders. His eyes rolled back in his head and he reared, his hooves slashing out at the horses in front of him. But the riders weren’t fazed by his fury; they pushed forward, boxing my horse in.

I felt myself start to sway and the world blurred, my body slowly sliding out of saddle as I tried to hold on. The sounds of Midnight’s screams started to fade and I lost my grip. I fell off Midnight to the side as I watched multiple lassos landing around my horse’s neck, pulling him away from me as I fell. I hit the ground hard, not bothering to try to brace my fall, the effects of the sedative quickly taking over control of my body.

My vision swam in and out like a flickering, fuzzy TV screen as I watched Midnight rear again and again, throwing his head side to side. He tried in vain to break away from the ropes and the captors, but them and their horses held him tight. I tried to talk, tried to yell to Midnight to stop before he got hurt.

But no sound came out.

I laid there on the ground, the screams of my horse sounding farther off with each passing second and the shouts of men barely audible. Darkness started to creep into my vision and my limbs became heavy as I saw the tips of another captor’s boots walk up to me.

I tried to lift my head to see who it was but it felt like lead. The captor kneeled down in front of me, his hand reaching down to tip my chin up. My eyes caught sight of the stranger from the bay horse crouching in front of me, one hand holding a short piece of rope.

“I told you not to try, my dear. I never liked having to do it this way.”

The stranger let my chin fall back towards the ground. Weariness overtook me more, the darkness swimming around me. I tried to hold out against the sedative but I could feel my eyes closing, my body giving up to the sweet blackness of the abyss. The last thing I heard was the fading screams of my horse trying desperately to get free; and the light touch of the stranger pulling my wrists together followed by the coarse touch of the rope.

Then the darkness overtook me, and I fell into its embrace.

~*~*~*~

Oh now this pair is really in trouble.

Skipping ahead just a few paragraphs from last week’s snippet. You aren’t missing anything important. My MC is now contemplating making a bolt for it.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

~*~*~*~

“Please don’t try it, my dear. You won’t get far at all. A mere few feet is how far they normally get,” the stranger said to me. He must have read my intentions in the way I settled into my seat and looked towards the woods. I sincerely hoped he wasn’t as quick as he claimed to be.

I took one last look at the circle of horses and noticed that the riders that did not have a gun, now had ropes in one hand. They were all ready for me to bolt. I knew my odds of getting out of here were slim to none.

But still I had to try.

My eyes caught the strangers once more before focusing on my escape route. “Don’t try it, my dear.”

I gripped the saddle hard and dug my heels in Midnight’s sides. He lunged forward, making a bolt for it. The stranger didn’t even move, his eyes simply followed my movements. Then again, he didn’t have to make a move; every single rider on the side that I was headed for spurred their horses forward towards me.

I prayed I would somehow break through their ranks but deep down I knew I was doomed.

We had taken no more than a few strides before I heard the sound of a gun going off. I let out a cry of pain as I felt a sharp point pierce my neck. I nearly toppled off my horse, one hand flying to my neck to meet the end of a dart.

I was right when I thought the guns were tranquilizers.

~*~*~*~

Well… That didn’t work. Hopefully these guys aren’t too bad. He did warn her.

Picking up right where I left off from last week’s snippet. Perhaps he’ll spill the million dollar question of what game he has for them to partake in.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

Confusion struck me at his words. “What game?”

“All in due time. But right now I need you to get off your horse.”

I shook my head, tightening my grip even more. Midnight pranced to the side, backing farther away from the approaching stranger. The minute Midnight made a move I heard the distant click of multiple guns being loaded. I yanked back on the reins and darted my eyes around the pressing circle of riders. Every other one of them held a gun in their hands. The same gun that the mysterious stranger had. In better view now, I realized it wasn’t your traditional shotgun. It almost looked like a tranquilizer gun, and that set off warning bells in my head.

I tore my gaze back to the approaching horse, tears freely spilling down my face as terror mounted inside me. “What do you want with us?!” I screamed.

The stranger continued to advance on us, Midnight backed away another step with each step the stranger’s horse took towards us. I didn’t make a move to stop Midnight, I was too frozen with fear to register his movements.

“I told you, my dear. You’re going to be a piece in my game. Don’t make this any harder on yourself or your horse. You know that kind of stress isn’t good for Midnight. Slowly, get off him, will you?”

Midnight snorted at his words, registering his name being used. My eyes widened in shock and I stuttered, “How…how did you know his name? Who the hell are you?”

Another million dollar question! Just how does he know her horse’s name, and does he then know her name? Tranquilizer guns aren’t a good sign either.

Breaking Point 3

This story is not yet on Wattpad either as it is another unfinished work and unedited as well. I refuse to put up anything that is unedited. One day I hope to finish this book, but my focus this year is Fated to Darkness.

However! If you wish to read anything else that I do have finished, you can hop on over to  my profile on Wattpad and check out what I have to offer. I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Comments are greatly appreciated, as are the reads.

An Important Piece (Snippet Sunday 8.7.16)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

Welcome to August, Darklings!

Since I left so many of you on a rotten cliffhanger on my last snippet at the end of June, I am going to be nice and pick up from there with what happens next. Feel free to check out that snippet to familiarize yourself with what was going on first!

My heart sank as I realized I probably wasn’t going to make it out of this alive. But I was more afraid for the safety of my horse than I was for myself. Midnight was my baby, and I couldn’t stand to have something happen to him.

I looked back to the stranger and felt a tear roll down my cheek. “Please, don’t. Let us go,” I choked out.

The stranger urged his bay horse towards us. “Do you think I’m going to harm you, my dear?”

I nodded forcefully, too afraid to speak.

The stranger’s face fell at my response. He looked genuinely concerned, but I knew better than to fall for that facade. “I’m not going to hurt you, or your horse for that matter.”

“Then let us go,” I spluttered, my shaking hands gripping the reins. Midnight pranced beneath me, feeling my anxiety and fear mount by the second. He repeatedly pawed the earth and bobbed his head. His message was clear: he wanted to bolt now, no matter the odds of outrunning all of them.

“Ah, but I can’t. I need you. You’re an important piece to my game.”

Dun dun dunnnn! What kind of game could this stranger be talking about?
