I’ll Do Anything But… (Snippet Sunday 3.26.17)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

For those that were following and looking forward to another snippet from Clockwork Heart… Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m holding off on sharing from that WiP this month, even though I missed the final shares for it in February. The (tentative) plan right now is to come back to it in April during Camp NaNo, because I believe that is the story I will be working on for Camp. Providing I do in fact manage to finish Fated to Darkness this month, and providing another WiP doesn’t scream at me to work on it instead. There’s quite a few trying to grab my next immediate attention…

So while I madly write away at the FINAL four chapters of Fated to Darkness, I’m once more going to share snippets from that novel for motivation. Hopefully ya’ll aren’t getting tired of seeing this novel.

This week’s excerpt picks up right where we left off in last week’s snippet.

And now for the fourth – and possibly final – peek at Chapter 9: The Gift…
(I may be jumping around a lot in this chapter, or skipping further ahead, to avoid spoilers.)

~*~*~*~

Almost like she was on numb autopilot, she saw herself reach forward and pick up the weapon rather than consciously knowing she did so. Her hand shook when she touched the cool hilt, afraid of the sharp object that could inflict such severe damage. Although, at the current moment, she was more afraid of Ciara’s punishment than of the deadly weapon.

“Torture her.”

The sternness to Ciara’s tone rushed chills down her spine. There was no room for argument in that voice and she whimpered. She didn’t want to hurt the girl. “P-Please, I’ll do anything but…” she whispered timidly.

“You will torture her or you will suffer the consequences.”

She shook her head weakly.

“Do it,” Ciara demanded coldly. There was her final warning.

~*~*~*~

And there is the edge of the point of no return. Will she do it? Or will she surprise us all? I guess you may never know, because this might be my last snippet of Fated to Darkness for awhile. I’m not too sure yet. We’ll see what the last week of March brings in my writing and how NaNo starts in April.

Blurb:
Three year old Heather Fraeis is like every other normal toddler. With a loving family, a family dog, and a little bit spoiled.

But fate can be a twisted and cruel friend.

Kidnapped on the night of her fourth birthday by a woman clad in black, Heather is whisked away to a realm that has never been known to exist. Forced into a life she doesn’t want as her kidnapper’s Heir, she comes to find that monsters do in fact exist, nightmares are more than bad dreams, and magic is more than just the thing of fairy tales.

Lies, fear, secrets, and pain await her around every corner. Swallowed whole by the dark path laid out before her, she is forced to fall with no light at the end of the tunnel to give her hope. Until she meets a young boy that may change everything once more for her…

Can Heather defy all the odds and overcome who is she forced to become? Or will it be too late for her to rise above the fate laid before her?

~*~*~*~

Fright immediately overtook Heather’s body when Ciara set the torch in the bracket beside the entrance and unlocked the door once more, still holding her tightly with her other hand.

“N-No. I be good. Please!”

“Shut up,” she spat, dragging her inside the room once more.

In the dim lighting of one low burning torch, Heather could just make out the girl laying motionless at the back of the cell. The flickering light made her look even worse for wear than when Heather had been dragged out hours ago in defiance. Or maybe it was the even more tattered, bloody clothes and fragile state that made her appear worse off. Blood stained the ground around her, still glistening rather fresh. Her hair was matted and she ever so weakly picked her head up to look to see who had come in with dull eyes. A slight spark of life shown in them when she saw Heather being dragged in but it was barely there.

Ciara must have come back in after taking her away to expel some frustration and anger on the poor girl. It was the only explanation Heather could fathom for her defeated state now.

The Dark One threw Heather forward to the girl again, making her stumble to the ground in front of her. Already raw knees scrapped on rough stone. The dagger she had been told to use before clattered to the floor behind her before Ciara kicked it toward her. It came to rest just in front of Heather, with the point ironically positioned at the girl.

“Pick it up.”

Do you think Heather is going to pick it up or not?

~*~*~*~

“Well?” Ciara hissed.

Heather swallowed past the lump that had formed in her throat. “Y-Yes,” she stuttered.

Ciara eyed her for a moment, probably trying to judge the truth to her reply. Heather was rather sure she didn’t find much in it. She wasn’t sure of her own reply after all. Instead, the word had been laced with more fear and horror than anything, even to her own ears. She wasn’t actually succumbing to her, she was acting out of cowardice; and cowardice was weakness in Ciara’s eyes.

“Then you shall prove it.”

The cold authority in her voice made Heather’s stomach drop out. Prove it? Oh goodness, she hoped that didn’t mean she would have to hurt the girl. She had hoped this was one of those learn-the-lesson-and-apply-it-next-time times, not do-it-over-and-over-until-she-got-it-right times.

“Let’s go,” she demanded, beckoning Heather over.

Hesitantly, she shuffled over to Ciara who immediately grabbed her upper arm tightly. With a flick of her hand a wind swept through the room, blowing out the torch on the wall and plunging them back into near darkness, save for the torch Ciara held in her other hand. She was dragged roughly down the corridor once more until they reached the same cell that housed the girl.

I’ve been gone for quite a few weeks but a new month is a new beginning, so here I am! For those that were following and looking forward to another snippet from Clockwork Heart… Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m holding off on sharing from that WiP this month, even though I missed the final shares for it in February. So while I madly write away at the FINAL five chapters of Fated to Darkness, I’m once more going to share snippets from that novel for motivation. Hopefully ya’ll aren’t getting tired of seeing this novel.

If you remember all the way back to the last week of January for the last snippet of FtD, I left off at the end of Chapter 8: Shifting Fear, in which Ciara was dragging off a kicking and screaming Heather for her first real act of defiance in refusing to harm someone. Now she’s had time to cower in a cell, but that time is almost up.

And now for the first peek at Chapter 9: The Gift…
(I may be jumping around a lot in this chapter, or skipping further ahead, to avoid spoilers.)

~*~*~*~

Despair and loneliness was quickly settling deep in Heather the longer she was stuck in there drowning in her fears and thoughts. The seconds ticked by maddeningly, turning to minutes, then hours. She was unsure how much time had actually passed before she finally picked up on the sound of boots clicking down the stone corridor.

Heather froze when she heard them, snapping her head toward the door. She backed up when the sound came closer and closer until her back hit the damp wall at the back of the cell. Her feet scuffed against the chains on the ground in her frantic scramble, making them clatter loudly in the deafening silence. She whimpered to hear the footsteps stop just outside the door, cowering against the wall as a huddled ball. The shadow of torchlight flitted through the small barred window in the door.

The bolt rolled back with a heavy thud and the door swung open on creaky hinges, sending chills and renewed fear racing down Heather’s spine. Firelight leaked into the room as the person walked inside, leaving the door open behind them. They were no more than a silhouette in the dim light, but Heather was sure she knew who it was.

The shadow lifted a hand and a fireball ignited in their palm, then it was thrown onto the torch set in the wall beside the door. Just like the other girl, Heather was suddenly blinded by the light that filled the enclosed space. Somehow, though she knew not how, the torches insides the cells were always brighter than any of the others down here. She shielded her eyes against the welcomed assault of life, whimpering. When she finally adjusted to the light again, blinking rapidly, she dropped her hands slowly to see who it was standing in the doorway.

Just as she suspected, her mentor stood stone-faced. She involuntarily cringed to see the look on her face, expecting to be punished at any second once more.

“Have we learned?” Ciara’s dark voice floated over to Heather like death’s cold fingers.

She wasn’t sure how to answer that. Learn what exactly? What was she supposed to learn by being thrown in here? Not to defy or back talk? She had already learned that from the multitude of curses in previous lessons. Not to say no to hurting someone? She had learned that too now despite how wrong she knew it was. Though she still wondered if she had the audacity to commit such an act. Unfortunately, her gut was telling her she would cave next Ciara pushed her toward that feat. The thought terrified and haunted her.

Four years old… Four years old and she might be a killer.

That had to set a new record.

A record she had no desire to beat and hold the title for.

~*~*~*~

I certainly wouldn’t like to hold that title either. Then again, I wouldn’t wish to hold Ciara’s title for her either, but… They kind of come hand in hand when it comes to the Dark One.

2017 is upon us which means its time for a new set of resolutions and new set of writing goals. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish Fated to Darkness as I had hoped to in December but I’m still plugging away at it. Since I’m not quite sure of my writing goals for the new year just yet, I’m going to continue sharing from Fated to Darkness this month. In February I believe I will be switching to something else brand spanking new. (This is still unedited, other than the look over editing I do before hitting post. Please excuse some errors, and suggestions are welcome.)

This week’s excerpt picks up right where we left off in last week’s snippet. It’s time to see if that threatening vision did the trick, or not. We last left off with these parting words of Ciara’s: “That is what will happen if you continue to defy me, Heir. All those you know and care for will suffer your consequences too. They will die one by one unless you be a good little Heir and do as I say. Is that what you really wish?”

And now for the final installment of Chapter 8: Shifting Fear…

~*~*~*~

Ciara’s harsh whisper echoed around her, eyes still glued upon the image of her dog lying still in the bright sunshine. Until it faded away before her eyes like the picture on a television screen when a VHS caught and unwound in the VCR, finally leaving her able to see what was really in front of her. Not that that particular scene was any better. Her whole body shook from the terror racking down to her core, tears streaming down pale cheeks flecked with blood. She could feel her insides breaking, a buzzing of angry bees swarming in her ears.

For a moment, the cold of the room no longer seeped into her bones. The dampness didn’t cling to her skin. All thoughts ceased to exist while she stared right through the girl in chains. It felt as if she was suddenly suspended in the air, floating on the edge of an abyssal brink that was creeping upwards to swallow her whole. Sounds, sensations, voices…they were all…detached suddenly.

“No… No, no no no.” The words started as a whisper slipping from her lips, then they started to grow into a panicked chant, tumbling over themselves. She began to shake her head, slowly at first, then faster. Her heart skipped into double time, triple.

“Torture her.”

Heather hardly even heard Ciara’s voice through the buzzing in her ears. Fear was suffocating her senses; the fear of losing someone so dear to her simply because she knew right from wrong and refused to do the wrong. It clouded all coherent thought for all she could focus on was her dog’s lifeless body in the grass. The image was burned into her mind.

“Torture her.” The words came firmer now, cutting through time’s stand still like a hot knife.

The insistent buzzing in her head lessened though her shaking did not. Waterworks would not stop staining her face and blurring her vision. Her eyes remained locked forward and glassy to the world around her. Dulled senses faintly caught a breeze of movement to her side, then the swish of fabric. Rough hands suddenly clasped over her wrists as a darkened shape bent into her line of sight.

Reality crashed back around her like a rubber band snapped on skin, all senses suddenly heightening beyond comprehension.

Ciara’s annoyed growl grated on her nerves and made her heart skip a beat, finally forced to focus on the present as her eyes fell on a murder-filled dark green gaze. A gasp spilled from her lips as she was yanked forcefully off the floor and dragged for the door, kicking and squirming the whole way in vain against a grip too tight.

“No!” she screeched on instinct. “Mommy! Daddy!”

“Shut up.” The Dark One banged the door back open without even touching it, pulling Heather outside. “You will learn, and you will learn now.”

Terrified eyes locked with the girl’s horrified and saddened ones again, her own pleading look in them now that mirrored the girl’s only a short time ago.

“Be strong,” she whispered, reaching a weak hand toward Heather before the door slammed shut in her face.

~*~*~*~

And that is where I’m going to leave you folks for a little while, on another cliffhanger. I love my cliffhangers. *Runs* Next month I’m going to pick up with something brand new that I’ve been working on.

Happy New Year, folks!

This week’s excerpt picks up a few pages after last week’s snippet. Heather openly defied Ciara in doing what was wanted of her — torturing the girl in front of her. For that, we all know Ciara is about to teach her a lesson.

~*~*~*~

“Fine,” she hissed, her voice slithering against Heather’s ears like death’s cold fingers. “You wish not to harm such a weakling? Then you will learn the next set of consequences for defiance. You wish to lose something precious to you?”

Heather actually glared defiantly yet, but that last question struck a chord in her that both scared her and made her glare waver. Her heartbeat quickened. What did she mean by “lose something precious to her”? She absolutely did not want to find out, but she had a bad gut feeling in her again that she was going to find out after all.

Out of nowhere her mind felt like it was splitting open again and she gasped, curling over on herself. Her hands flew to her head, pressing against her temples in a vain attempt to hold together what she was sure was being ripped to shreds. Her vision started to sway, darkness creeping in and she thought for sure she was going to pass out from the intense pressure building in her head. Moments after it became unbearable it burst and gave way to a flurry of images, before finally settling on one single scene.

Her body stilled, frozen in time. She was trapped within her own head at Ciara’s mercy, forced to watch the scene play out in her mind’s eye like a vivid dream. Wide eyes stared blankly ahead from what she was being shown, no longer seeing her surroundings, mouth agape slightly in fear and shock.

The images started to move like a flip book gaining speed until they were a flawless movie in front of her eyes. She thought it was real, watching it. She could have sworn it was happening right in front of her for all the senses slamming into her. A warm breeze caressing her skin, grass and cool earth squishing between her bare toes, sun shining down on her, the scent of fresh clipped grass tickling her nose, and the sound of singing birds filling the air.

Tangible terror and horror sprang up in her though, clashing with the serene peace to the scene as she followed her dog running around their backyard, barking and chasing a squirrel up a tree.

She could do nothing more than watch as her dog tumbled along before planting front paws on the tree trunk and barking up its limbs where the squirrel disappeared within. Then she suddenly froze and whined in distress, tail tucking and backing away.

Magic. Heather felt prickling magic trailing across her skin with an icy finger, suffocating the area and snuffing out the serenity.

Jazy began to cry in panic. The sound tore at Heather’s ears, causing her heart to skip and she found herself trying to plead with Ciara but no words came out. She tried to move, to reach toward her dog when her screams and yelps of pain made Jazy wither and fall to the ground. She convulsed for a moment before her eyes rolled back in her head and she jerked harshly, taking her last breath and going still, tongue lolling out of her mouth.

Heather tried to scream from the sight in front of her, but only painful silence met her eyes. Hot tears fell down her cheeks. She couldn’t move, she couldn’t speak, she couldn’t stop what she was seeing! She was a prisoner to it. Her breathing came quicker, shallower now in hyperventilation.

“Jazy…” she whispered, finally hearing herself speak the name out loud though it echoed as if down a long tunnel.

“That is what will happen if you continue to defy me, Heir. All those you know and care for will suffer your consequences too. They will die one by one unless you be a good little Heir and do as I say. Is that what you really wish?”

~*~*~*~

Now that is one vivid dream-like image I would never wish to see or experience. I will be sharing one more excerpt from FtD next week and then moving onto something brand-spanking new for February!

Happy New Year, folks! Please excuse some errors.)

I’m skipping ahead a bit from last week’s snippet. For any that actually read last week to see Ciara’s ominous final words, it turned out the Dark One wanted Heather to pick up where she left off with the prisoner. This week picks up right at the start of that.

~*~*~*~

Tears brimmed her eyes and her hand shook as she lifted the knife, holding it in an awkward fist. Her arm raised higher to bring it down upon the prisoner in a slash, not knowing how else to torture the girl. Yes, she hadn’t been able to tear her eyes away from how Ciara went about harming her at first, but that didn’t mean she took note of any technique to know what to do. She hadn’t wanted to take note of it, and she certainly didn’t want to hurt her now. It wasn’t as if she even knew how to begin to physically harm somewhere with a weapon, therefore causing her movements to be unsure and clumsy.

The prickling of her magic was stirring at the prospect, temptation luring her ever so slightly toward the first action of the deed, but she couldn’t even think straight to fall to that dark, wicked lure. The only things running through her mind were her own pains and horrors in the form of memories, and the echoing screams of the beaten girl in front of her from just moments ago.

The girl slowly picked her head up to look at her. Pale blue-grey eyes full of defeat and acceptance that she would never make it out of here alive met Heather’s wavering bright green ones. Their gazes locked and Heather’s world froze in place.

It was almost like the girl was pleading with her to either end her quickly, or to take the chance to run from Ciara while she still could. To not give up fighting against this evil woman like she was about to by following Ciara’s demand. Despite the fear glimmering over them, Heather found peace in those blue-grey eyes. A peace to know it that one day it would all end, that it couldn’t go on forever no matter how bad it got. Nothing lasted forever, right?

She felt like those eyes were searching her soul, sensing the innocence that still laid within her, though tarnished slightly. Perhaps seeing the purity in her that could still be saved if only action was taken quickly enough.

Those eyes saw everything about her in that single instant they shared. Her fears, joys, hopes, dreams, worries…

All of it.

“You can still run,” the girl whispered hoarsely, her voice cracking under all the screaming she had been doing. Blood stained her pale features, fragile frame shaking under all the pain that still racked her battered form. “Run and don’t look back, little girl. Far and fast from here, from that woman. Don’t let her destroy you too.”

~*~*~*~

Do you think she’ll take her advice and try to run? Only one way to find out: stop back next week. I do have one other serious question, unrelated to the snippet in a sense. What makes you decide if you’re going to leave a comment in regards to the snippet? Or why don’t you leave a comment if you read?

This week’s teaser picks up a couple pages after last week’s snippet. Ciara had taken charge and had begun to torture the prisoner, making Heather watch the entire time. We pick up toward the end of the torment when Heather can finally bear no more.

Now for the sixth peek at Chapter 8: Shifting Fear…

~*~*~*~

“S-Stop!” she cried out, tears slipping down her cheeks. “Pl-Please… Stop…”

Ciara must have cut the curse off on the girl at her plea for she faintly registered the screaming choke off into great gasps for air.

“What did you just say?” Her dark voice slithered through the space between them like a snake ready to strike. She didn’t need to have her eyes open to be able to feel the cold gaze upon her. The shiver down her spine was enough of a tell.

Despite having her ears covered she heard her mentor’s question loud and clear in the echoing silence left in torment’s wake. With shaking hands she uncovered her ears, heart still hammering in her chest. She couldn’t bring herself to look though. “M-Make it stop…” she blubbered, “p-please… Can’t…”

The Dark One was upon her before Heather could react to the swishing sound of her cloak signaling movement. She gagged as she was grabbed around the throat and thrown back harshly into the wall. Sharp nails that dug into soft flesh held her there with tiptoes barely scuffling the floor. Her eyes finally shot open in surprise and fear, grappling at Ciara’s hands in a pitiful attempt to pry her mentor away and clear her airway from being crushed. Out of the corner of her eye she saw the girl look up toward them before she hung her head slightly in defeat.

“You are supposed to watch, Heir. Not turn away like a coward. It’s pathetic, it’s weakness,” Ciara spat hatefully. “My Heir will not be soft!”

Heather flinched from the tone, but was more focused on the fact she could hardly breathe. Her face was turning red from the lack of air. Ciara glared at her a moment longer before dropping her to the ground in a heap. Heather rubbed at her throat as she was released, wheezing large gulps of air back into her lungs. Each breath was a painful stab at first until the dizziness passed. Silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

“If you will not watch, then may it be your time to prove yourself worthy as my Heir.”

~*~*~*~

This is going to get ugly quick, isn’t it?

For all the Snippeteers, I know we had no actual post last week due to the holiday, but I still shared a snippet. Since this week’s snippet is going to pick up just a couple paragraphs from last week’s snippet, it may interest you to read last week’s first to know what is going on. The prisoner speaks first here.

Now for the fifth peek at Chapter 8: Shifting Fear…

~*~*~*~

“Don’t listen to her,” she spoke up. “Make a run for it, little one. That door is unlocked, go now. Go while you still can.”

Heather peeked her eyes up to her before quickly looking away from her gaze again before she could anger her mentor further. She should have known it wouldn’t take much to annoy her more though. Ciara snarled and Heather watched out of the corner of her eye as the Dark One whirled around to face the prisoner, backhanding her across the face next for still talking. She reached down and grabbed the girl by the collar of her shirt, hoisting her up a bit. Dark lips curled in a well-tamed sneer down at her, enjoying the pure fear flitting across those pale blue-grey eyes despite how she was trying to appear strong.

“You make Dallen sick,” the girl hissed out in a wavering voice.

Ciara looked absolutely livid now and she threw the girl into the wall, making her gasp in surprise. When she crumpled to the floor again, Ciara stomped down on the girl’s wrist with the heel of her boot, bending it in a way it should not bend. A crack sounded from it and the girl cried out in pain. Heather cringed from the sickening sound and the girl’s cry, feeling sick to her stomach already but she couldn’t tear her eyes away now. The Dark One slowly crouched down, still standing on the girl’s now broken wrist.

“You will do well to shut up, fool. By the end of this night, you will be begging for death. Don’t try to make friends with the Heir that will level this pathetic town to the ground,” she whispered darkly.

She whimpered a little, wincing under the pain. “You’ll…fail… Just like with all the others that came before her. They all failed after you showed them off too. She’s too young to be anyone you ever wanted.”

~*~*~*~

Something tells me the girl is only going to get even more hurt from here on out. However, there’s one thing that comes to mind: if Ciara is so powerful then why has she failed with all the others? And just how many others were there?

December is upon us but I’m not at all ready for the snow and cold, I’m wishing we could skip it, as well as the holiday madness. But it’s the last month of 2016 so it better be the best one for it’s our last shot. Since one of my goals for this year was to finish Fated to Darkness — and NaNo still didn’t finish it — I’m hoping to finish it this final month. Which means I’m going to continue to share from it this month as motivation.

Happy Holidays, folks! There’s lots of those going on right now so to whatever you celebrate, may it be full of wishes and good fortune.

This week’s snippet picks up just a paragraph or so after last week’s snippet. I just skipped the redundant threatening of Ciara to the girl when she back talked to her.

Now for the fourth peek at Chapter 8: Shifting Fear…

~*~*~*~

While the girl’s terror had definitely returned from the strike, after a moment she picked her head back up to look at Heather’s stunned and blank expression that conveyed so many emotions it was hard to tell where one started and another ended. It was all jumbled among her pale features and haunted eyes.

“Did she hurt you, too?”

Ciara glared at the girl, and Heather looked into the girl’s eyes. She could see the pain and terror that laid within them, but there was nothing she could do to help this poor girl. She was weak against Ciara, she was but a child. Unsure of what she was doing, she slowly nodded.

“You need to run. Get far away from her.”

“Shut up,” Ciara hissed again, becoming furious.

“How old are you?” The girl was simply ignoring the Dark One now, her attention only focused on Heather.

“Do not answer her, Heir. We do not speak to prisoners.”

Heather wasn’t listening though, drawn to the girl who was being kind to her at the moment, even though she was surrounded by the face of darkness, pain, and death. Sure, she had fear in her eyes and she seemed a bit wary of Heather as well, but she genuinely seemed like she was sorry Heather was stuck with Ciara. As if she too had seen the fates of the other Heirs and knew poor Heather might end up like one of them: dead.

“How old are you?” she asked gently again, albeit softly.

“F-Four,” she answered quietly after a moments pause.

The girl looked like her heart had just broken to hear how young she was. “What’s your name?”

“Hea–“

She let out a cry as Ciara struck her across the face, stopping her reply. Tears welled in her eyes and she whimpered as she hesitantly glanced upwards to see her mentor looming over her and leering with a curled lip.

~*~*~*~

Ciara certainly does not like to be ignored, or disobeyed. This could get ugly from here.
