Happy Earth day! Sooo… Three weeks into Camp NaNo and I still don’t have a word count to show for it. With only nine days left I better get my butt in gear and finish this short story I switched to. I mean, I dropped my goal to something pitifully small for me, I better be able to pull it off. Here’s hoping the last week of NaNo is going better for all you readers out there than it is for me!

Even though I’ve switched what I’m working on for Camp NaNoWriMo I’m going to continue to share from Embermyst just to finish out the month. For those that have followed along over the last couple years, you know I got my debut publication in 2016 with this short story in an anthology. Since the company went out of business last year and I received my rights back I began rewriting Embermyst into a full fleshed out novel last November.

I’m picking up right where I left off from in last week’s excerpt. If you missed last week, or need a quick refresh, Morticia was feeling some peaceful coming over her fatigued state, like loving arms pulling her close. So without further ado, here are the next six lines to the never before seen prologue of Embermyst

(Excuse any errors; this is still an unedited WiP. This passage is a bit edited from what I have in the Word document as the whispered speech is actually spoken in Latin. I just haven’t created the exact translation yet so I substituted just the English to avoid looking like an idiot. LOL. If anyone knows Latin well enough to translate or knows someone who does and would be willing to give me a shout on the translation, it’d be greatly appreciated!)

~*~*~*~

“Maiden, Mother, Crone, hear me now for I am thy daughter. Hold me safe in loving arms, guard and bless my steady path,” she whispered under her breath.

In the midst of security something pricked the essence of her being. Alarm coursed through weak limbs and a groggy mind. The safety net surrounding her snapped away harshly like a knife through her soul. Her chest rose and fell with one last erratic breath, arching upwards in a spasm of quiet agony, straining against the ropes that bound her before the unknown abyss snatched her away and reality faded out of existence.

~*~*~*~

And good energy turned bad… Well, it was nice while it lasted? Sorry for the shortness this week, that was the end of the Prologue!

I Was Engaged (Embermyst Promotion)

Due to the fact this is still a WiP I do not have a reworked blurb to share yet and the image comes from the original short story (a part that has not changed, mostly, the second question is a little different; I just haven’t fully figured out the new question to change it yet). Nor will the story be posted to Wattpad either as I have all intentions of pitching it for publication upon its completion. That being said there will be no “if you wish to read more” option.

However! If you wish to read anything else that I have out for free, you can click the tabs above to browse through my available works and then follow the links to my Wattpad account. I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Sooo… Two weeks into Camp NaNo and with my eight day vacation from work and I still don’t have a word count to show for it. Worse yet, I ended up dropping the project I was getting nowhere on and changed to something else. That something else isn’t going too well either. The word count still isn’t coming, the motivation still isn’t there, and the want to write still hasn’t return. And we are halfway through Camp today. Just my luck.

I’m skipping ahead just a few lines from last week’s excerpt. I left out a plea from her fiancé to basically come back to her for explanation purposes. So without further ado, here are the next ten lines to the never before seen prologue of Embermyst

(Excuse any errors; this is still an unedited WiP. Minor punctuation abuse this week to fit the limit too.)

~*~*~*~

She let her head fall to the side, catching a washed out glimpse of her fiancé in the doorway through spots of black light in her vision; his voice whispered against her senses, so far off and faint she thought for a moment she imagined it. The priest’s babbling had become just as distant as the seconds ticked by.

A strange heaviness began to creep into her limbs, dragging her down to the earth. Her wild heart had begun to still, the roaring in her ears turning to a light buzzing sound; she could almost hear a reassuring call among that buzzing. A tickled breath and promise of release from this torment. She knew the energy surrounding it, recognized it cocooning her in safety like a second skin. Welcome familiarity surrounded her soul, driving out the heightened sensations of pain, grief, and misguided belief suffocating her in the room.

Morticia closed her eyes, relaxing into those open arms. The world around her bled away, coming to a peaceful standstill. No chanting, no pain, no rough hands forcing her down, no stress, no fear.

~*~*~*~

Any guesses as to what energy she’s feeling? I love hearing guesses.

The first week of Camp NaNo is over and I…haven’t written a single word. *Sigh* I wasn’t at all ready for the start of NaNo this time, and exhaustion coupled with stress has kept me from catching myself up to speed to start writing. Hopefully now that I’ve got eight days of glorious freedom from work I’ll have the time and energy to refresh myself and start writing finally.

With Camp NaNoWriMo back in the swing of things I’m switching up what I’m sharing from. For those that have followed along over the last couple years, you know I got my debut publication in 2016 with one of my short stories in an anthology. Since the company went out of business last year and I received my rights back I began rewriting Embermyst into a full fleshed out novel last November. My project for the month of April is to continue (and hopefully finish) the rewritten story. That means for this whole month I will be sharing from Embermyst as part of the motivational process to write.

I don’t want to pick up halfway through the novel sharing from my current writing location, so I’m going to start from the new beginning. I’m skipping ahead a few paragraphs from last week’s excerpt. So without further ado, here are the next nine lines to the never before seen prologue of Embermyst

(Excuse any errors; this is still an unedited WiP.)

~*~*~*~

“Oh Holy Father, come forth and save your child from eternal damnation! Come forth and consecrate this sacred place with your presence! Drive this wretched thing from her and make her soul pure again!”

His booming voice cut through the growing haze of reality. With effort she peeled her eyelids open to glance over the priest, arms up to the sky with his head tilted back. A Bible clutched in one hand and a set of rosary beads in his other as he called upon the powers that be.

“I’m not… I am not his…” Her voice didn’t even elicit a whisper amongst his determined chanting. She couldn’t take anymore of this.

~*~*~*~

This might not end well.

Happy Easter, folks! Or, as I’ve been saying all day, happy Easter Fools! Hopefully April Fool’s tricks didn’t ruin the holiday in any way. If you’re participating in 2018’s first NaNoWriMo session, welcome to the madness that is Camp NaNo as well! The descent into the fevered writing frenzy has begun, and probably with a rough start for most seeing as it began on a holiday. I know I haven’t had a single chance to write yet. Not that I was ready for it yet thanks to the “second Christmas” rush Easter brings to retail.

With Camp NaNoWriMo having begun I’m switching up what I’m sharing from again. For those that have followed along over the last couple years, you know I got my debut publication in 2016 with one of my short stories in an anthology. “IN THE NAME of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-“

“Quit your chanting!” Morticia shouted over the din of the priest’s rising and falling voice, her own cracking with strain. Sweat dripped down the sides of her face, plastering black locks of hair to her skin. Her chest heaved with each labored breath she took. The stress began to take a toll on her body, sapping her energy, draining her fight. Her heart raced a mile in her chest, “For the thousandth time, I am not possessed by some demon!”

She jerked her head away from one of his disciples attempting to draw another cross on her forehead in holy water. The other waved a cross the size of his hand in front of her face before laying the cold metal against the heated bare skin of her chest. In vain she tried to weakly buck and twist away from them, rough hands forcing her back down on the bed by the shoulders. Coarse rope cut into fragile wrists from her continuous fighting; blood roared in her eardrums, beginning to blur the world with strain and exhaustion.

I don’t think they are going to listen to reason.

Camp Creatures And Eureka! Moments

Happy Camp NaNoWriMo!

Camp NaNo 2017

The first plunge into madness for 2017 has finally begun! Hooray! I’ll be honest, I’m quite a fan of the banners and icons they have for Camp this year. They even named some creatures to pertain to writing and novels. Like the infamous, abundant Plot Bunny pictured above on the banner. I’m not quite sure why the bunny has antlers, unless they’re supposed to represent the branches of scenes and story that make up a plot.

I totally pulled that from thin air but it actually makes sense.

I think my other favorite creature they came up with is the Block Ness Monster. It’s just so perfect in so many ways. They also had the Darewolf, Chore Grizzly, Guilt Monkey, and Storysquatch.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I think I might end up using these creatures when I talk about writing now, just to reference them. Like when I’m stuck and I’m screaming at my story, I’m going to yell, “Get out of my way Block Ness Monster!” Or something along those lines. I love it.

So onto the stories of NaNo so far!

I did start writing the eve of NaNo before I went to bed. I was a little bit late starting because I was distracted by things and amused with other stuff, but I did write before crashing. I ended up not going to be till about 5am, but I got a little over 2k written and finished Chapter 38 that night.

I will admit I’ve been slacking the first few days already. I mean, I had four days off in a row — today is my last day off, which, heh, work tried to call me in, I didn’t pick up or ever respond — but I should have had oodles of words written by the end of tonight!

As I did in past NaNo’s, I should have had 5k written for each day off. My own little personal goal I set for myself in past years because normally on work days I’m lucky if I do any writing depending on the shift, and rarely do I have more than one day off in a row to gain any momentum. Welcome to the wonderful life of retail. *Heavy sarcasm*

With that math, by tonight I should have a word count of roughly 20k already written. And, ah, yeah. I don’t.

At the end of the first day I was just under 5k. I was tired that day because I was woken up early with less than five hours of sleep from my late night by a whole lot of banging and voices coming through the vents. Gotta love when you have to fix a vehicle. I also had a spontaneous road trip so that didn’t help productivity too much. Lack of sleep helped even less after the week of work I had before Saturday.

Day 2, which was Sunday, of NaNo I severely slacked and I don’t think I wrote anything. I was kind of bleh that day and I also had to get through my taxes so the day was kind of shot when I add on my shows for Sunday night. Or, well, show now. No more plural. ABC cancelled Time After Time with no warning right in the middle of the first season. I was so pissed. Still pissed.

Yesterday was sorta, kinda better. I didn’t start writing until later at night, but I also had a major eureka moment. And I mean like…

“EUREKA! THAT’S IT!”

…kind of major.

Jumping up and down, grinning from ear to ear, squealing uncontrollably kind of eureka moment. The kind where I run through my house crazily to get a drink and make my parents wonder if I won the lottery or something in my excitement. (Winning the lottery would be nice though, because then I could quit my job and just write.)

Surprisingly, my eureka moment didn’t come from a shower this time. I was meaninglessly scrolling through Facebook, trying to find my motivation to write, and I think I was looking at the cover of Paranormal Pleasures, staring at my name in print when suddenly motivation reared its head hard and nearly knocked me off my feet like this:

“You know what, dammit, I want to publish my first standalone novel this year and that is not going to happen with me sitting here mindlessly on social media. I’m going to write. I’m going dark for several hours until words bleed from my fingertips onto the page. And I have absolutely no idea where this is coming from so strongly all of a sudden but I am running with it dammit. Onwards! To Word, and to fantasy lands! *Holds out sword and pen, charges away from the internet*
(Yep. I’ve definitely lost my mind.)”

So at that point I did go dark. However, I managed about 200 words before I started to hit a brick wall. That’s when I realized my lack of excitement for NaNo the first two nights while working on Chapter 38 was because I was unsure exactly how the final chapters were supposed to go, and I was still trying to figure out my Epilogue issue. If anyone remembers my post from Friday I had a slight break through on the Epilogue, but it still wasn’t fitting perfectly.

My problem wasn’t a lack of excitement and motivation this time around, after all, it was that I was unsure how to work out the end of the novel without knowing how to fix my Epilogue. I mean, I was only 2.5 chapters away from the Epilogue, I had to figure it out soon.

Instead of writing then, I grabbed my fidget cube and started pacing my room, talking to myself and in the mirror as I tried to work out what was going to happen. I ran through multiple scenarios of, “Okay, what if she does this instead of this, how would that affect the end?”. That eventually made me realize I needed to change the timeline between Chapter 38 — which I just finished — and Chapter 39, the chapter I was stuck and dragging on at the moment.

By realizing I need to change the timeline just a bit to allow more time in between the chapters so it would fit my original outline and plotline, I stumbled across where the chapter needed to go, and how the next chapter needed to work. That then lead me to working out kinks to better fit my original ending of the novel and then suddenly…

BAM!

The solution to my Epilogue was slapping me in the face, all with a simple town scene, all with a single character showing their face in my head. It was perfect. Instead of using the character I thought of in my shower inspiration, I could use a different character I had never introduced yet, but someone who would become important in the next book. My Mystery Man character would hold the similarity I needed to match to leave my readers on cliffhangers and questions as the hook of the end of my book, and it still allowed me to the use the Epilogue how I originally planned for.

It was absolutely perfect!

I spent probably a good ten to fifteen minutes squealing and jumping around because I was so happy over the fix. (It’s an author thing, don’t judge me.) After that I grabbed paper and pen and feverishly began to record everything step by step I had just figured out in my head. I even went to a couple friends to run a scenario past them to see if they, as the reader, would assume and react in the way I was thinking the reader would.

(It’s not easy being author, reader, and character all at once. At one point I even threw my pen across the room and grabbed another because it stopped working and I didn’t have time for that.)

To my excitement, they pretty much assumed what I had hoped for, and after that I was all set. I’m still going to have to be careful with the Epilogue so I don’t give away anything I don’t want to, but I have my fix and that was all I had hoped for at the moment.

An hour and a half later of pacing my room talking to myself, reciting character lines out loud to see how they would react, much squealing and yelling, feverish writing of two and half pages of scribbled notes, and somehow a pulled muscle in my neck — don’t ask, I still don’t know how, and I finally had the FINAL two and a half chapters and the Epilogue all planned out.

No more uncertainty. No more plot holes. No more hesitance.

I can write like the wind from here on out in this novel, and that’s exactly what I did afterwards. I sat back down around 1am and just wrote. No distractions. Just music, my notes, my Word doc, my characters, and my fingers bleeding away on the page. A little over two hours later and I had written about 5k words and had finished Chapter 39.

There’s only two chapters plus my Epilogue left to write in this novel and I will officially be done with the first draft. I seriously can’t believe I’m saying that. I will be done with the first draft of the first novel that is my heart and soul series. Ho-ly. Shit.

I think my estimate of 20k to finish this novel might be a little bit off, but I don’t think it’s going to surpass 25k. I only have three full chapters to write altogether, and I’m pretty sure the Epilogue is going to be short. Chapter 40 will be the longest one, and Chapter 41 won’t be too long I don’t think, depending how much drama this final scene ends up bringing.

But I’m almost there! *SQUEALS!*

I’m half terrified and half excited to finish this first draft. Like, AHHHH!

Two more and the Epilogue and then I can move onto Clockwork Heart for the month, because I do want to finish and release that novella/novel this year. As of last night I’m just over 9k words for Camp this month already, I think by tomorrow I might be near 15k. Right after I hit the post button on this bad boy I’m jumping into starting Chapter 40. Once I grab a snack to munch on too.

End of the novel, here I come!

For those that were following and looking forward to another snippet from Clockwork Heart… Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m holding off on sharing from that WiP this month, even though I missed the final shares for it in February. The (tentative) plan right now is to come back to it in April during Camp NaNo, because I believe that is the story I will be working on for Camp. Providing I do in fact manage to finish Fated to Darkness this month, and providing another WiP doesn’t scream at me to work on it instead. There’s quite a few trying to grab my next immediate attention…

So while I madly write away at the FINAL four chapters of Fated to Darkness, I’m once more going to share snippets from that novel for motivation. Hopefully ya’ll aren’t getting tired of seeing this novel.

This week’s excerpt picks up right where we left off in last week’s snippet.

And now for the fourth – and possibly final – peek at Chapter 9: The Gift…
(I may be jumping around a lot in this chapter, or skipping further ahead, to avoid spoilers.)

~*~*~*~

Almost like she was on numb autopilot, she saw herself reach forward and pick up the weapon rather than consciously knowing she did so. Her hand shook when she touched the cool hilt, afraid of the sharp object that could inflict such severe damage. Although, at the current moment, she was more afraid of Ciara’s punishment than of the deadly weapon.

“Torture her.”

The sternness to Ciara’s tone rushed chills down her spine. There was no room for argument in that voice and she whimpered. She didn’t want to hurt the girl. “P-Please, I’ll do anything but…” she whispered timidly.

“You will torture her or you will suffer the consequences.”

She shook her head weakly.

“Do it,” Ciara demanded coldly. There was her final warning.

~*~*~*~

And there is the edge of the point of no return. Will she do it? Or will she surprise us all? I guess you may never know, because this might be my last snippet of Fated to Darkness for awhile. I’m not too sure yet. We’ll see what the last week of March brings in my writing and how NaNo starts in April.

This story is not yet on Wattpad because it is my baby that I hope to publish one day, and if no one will publish me, I am self publishing. But it’s also not on Wattpad because it’s in first draft phases yet. So there will be no “if you wish to read more…”

Fright immediately overtook Heather’s body when Ciara set the torch in the bracket beside the entrance and unlocked the door once more, still holding her tightly with her other hand.

“N-No. I be good. Please!”

“Shut up,” she spat, dragging her inside the room once more.

In the dim lighting of one low burning torch, Heather could just make out the girl laying motionless at the back of the cell. The flickering light made her look even worse for wear than when Heather had been dragged out hours ago in defiance. Or maybe it was the even more tattered, bloody clothes and fragile state that made her appear worse off. Blood stained the ground around her, still glistening rather fresh. Her hair was matted and she ever so weakly picked her head up to look to see who had come in with dull eyes. A slight spark of life shown in them when she saw Heather being dragged in but it was barely there.

Ciara must have come back in after taking her away to expel some frustration and anger on the poor girl. It was the only explanation Heather could fathom for her defeated state now.

The Dark One threw Heather forward to the girl again, making her stumble to the ground in front of her. Already raw knees scrapped on rough stone. The dagger she had been told to use before clattered to the floor behind her before Ciara kicked it toward her. It came to rest just in front of Heather, with the point ironically positioned at the girl.

“Pick it up.”

Do you think Heather is going to pick it up or not?

This story is not yet on Wattpad because it is my baby that I hope to publish one day, and if no one will publish me, I am self publishing. But it’s also not on Wattpad because it’s in first draft phases yet. So there will be no “if you wish to read more…”

However! If you wish to read anything else that I have out for free, you can hop on over to  my profile on Wattpad and check out what I have to offer. Or if you wish to read my debut release, Embermyst, you can find out more about that in the tabs above. (I’m working on the tabs, bare with me.) I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Comments are greatly appreciated, as are the reads. Prove It (Snippet Sunday 3.12.17)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

So while I madly write away at the FINAL five chapters of Fated to Darkness, I’m once more going to share snippets from that novel for motivation. Hopefully ya’ll aren’t getting tired of seeing this novel.

This week’s excerpt picks up right where we left off in last week’s snippet.

And now for the second peek at Chapter 9: The Gift…
(I may be jumping around a lot in this chapter, or skipping further ahead, to avoid spoilers.)

~*~*~*~

“Well?” Ciara hissed.

Heather swallowed past the lump that had formed in her throat. “Y-Yes,” she stuttered.

Ciara eyed her for a moment, probably trying to judge the truth to her reply. Heather was rather sure she didn’t find much in it. She wasn’t sure of her own reply after all. Instead, the word had been laced with more fear and horror than anything, even to her own ears. She wasn’t actually succumbing to her, she was acting out of cowardice; and cowardice was weakness in Ciara’s eyes.

“Then you shall prove it.”

The cold authority in her voice made Heather’s stomach drop out. Prove it? Oh goodness, she hoped that didn’t mean she would have to hurt the girl. She had hoped this was one of those learn-the-lesson-and-apply-it-next-time times, not do-it-over-and-over-until-she-got-it-right times.

“Let’s go,” she demanded, beckoning Heather over.

Hesitantly, she shuffled over to Ciara who immediately grabbed her upper arm tightly. With a flick of her hand a wind swept through the room, blowing out the torch on the wall and plunging them back into near darkness, save for the torch Ciara held in her other hand. She was dragged roughly down the corridor once more until they reached the same cell that housed the girl.

I think worse just came to worst… For more than one party involved.

I’ve been gone for quite a few weeks but a new month is a new beginning, so here I am! For those that were following and looking forward to another snippet from Clockwork Heart… Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m holding off on sharing from that WiP this month, even though I missed the final shares for it in February. Providing I do in fact manage to finish Fated to Darkness this month, and providing another WiP doesn’t scream at me to work on it instead. There’s quite a few trying to grab my next immediate attention…

So while I madly write away at the FINAL five chapters of Fated to Darkness, I’m once more going to share snippets from that novel for motivation. Hopefully ya’ll aren’t getting tired of seeing this novel.

If you remember all the way back to the last week of January for the last snippet of FtD, I left off at the end of Chapter 8: Shifting Fear, in which Ciara was dragging off a kicking and screaming Heather for her first real act of defiance in refusing to harm someone. Now she’s had time to cower in a cell, but that time is almost up.

And now for the first peek at Chapter 9: The Gift…
(I may be jumping around a lot in this chapter, or skipping further ahead, to avoid spoilers.)

~*~*~*~

Despair and loneliness was quickly settling deep in Heather the longer she was stuck in there drowning in her fears and thoughts. The seconds ticked by maddeningly, turning to minutes, then hours. She was unsure how much time had actually passed before she finally picked up on the sound of boots clicking down the stone corridor.

Heather froze when she heard them, snapping her head toward the door. She backed up when the sound came closer and closer until her back hit the damp wall at the back of the cell. Her feet scuffed against the chains on the ground in her frantic scramble, making them clatter loudly in the deafening silence. She whimpered to hear the footsteps stop just outside the door, cowering against the wall as a huddled ball. The shadow of torchlight flitted through the small barred window in the door.

The bolt rolled back with a heavy thud and the door swung open on creaky hinges, sending chills and renewed fear racing down Heather’s spine. Firelight leaked into the room as the person walked inside, leaving the door open behind them. They were no more than a silhouette in the dim light, but Heather was sure she knew who it was.

The shadow lifted a hand and a fireball ignited in their palm, then it was thrown onto the torch set in the wall beside the door. Just like the other girl, Heather was suddenly blinded by the light that filled the enclosed space. Somehow, though she knew not how, the torches insides the cells were always brighter than any of the others down here. She shielded her eyes against the welcomed assault of life, whimpering. When she finally adjusted to the light again, blinking rapidly, she dropped her hands slowly to see who it was standing in the doorway.

Just as she suspected, her mentor stood stone-faced. She involuntarily cringed to see the look on her face, expecting to be punished at any second once more.

“Have we learned?” Ciara’s dark voice floated over to Heather like death’s cold fingers.

She wasn’t sure how to answer that. Learn what exactly? What was she supposed to learn by being thrown in here? Not to defy or back talk? She had already learned that from the multitude of curses in previous lessons. Not to say no to hurting someone? She had learned that too now despite how wrong she knew it was. Though she still wondered if she had the audacity to commit such an act. Unfortunately, her gut was telling her she would cave next Ciara pushed her toward that feat. The thought terrified and haunted her.

Four years old… Four years old and she might be a killer.

That had to set a new record.

A record she had no desire to beat and hold the title for.

~*~*~*~

I certainly wouldn’t like to hold that title either. Then again, I wouldn’t wish to hold Ciara’s title for her either, but… They kind of come hand in hand when it comes to the Dark One.

2017 is upon us which means its time for a new set of resolutions and new set of writing goals. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish Fated to Darkness as I had hoped to in December but I’m still plugging away at it. Since I’m not quite sure of my writing goals for the new year just yet, I’m going to continue sharing from Fated to Darkness this month. In February I believe I will be switching to something else brand spanking new. (This is still unedited, other than the look over editing I do before hitting post. Please excuse some errors, and suggestions are welcome.)

This week’s excerpt picks up right where we left off in last week’s snippet. It’s time to see if that threatening vision did the trick, or not. We last left off with these parting words of Ciara’s: “That is what will happen if you continue to defy me, Heir. All those you know and care for will suffer your consequences too. They will die one by one unless you be a good little Heir and do as I say. Is that what you really wish?”

And now for the final installment of Chapter 8: Shifting Fear…

~*~*~*~

Ciara’s harsh whisper echoed around her, eyes still glued upon the image of her dog lying still in the bright sunshine. Until it faded away before her eyes like the picture on a television screen when a VHS caught and unwound in the VCR, finally leaving her able to see what was really in front of her. Not that that particular scene was any better. Her whole body shook from the terror racking down to her core, tears streaming down pale cheeks flecked with blood. She could feel her insides breaking, a buzzing of angry bees swarming in her ears.

For a moment, the cold of the room no longer seeped into her bones. The dampness didn’t cling to her skin. All thoughts ceased to exist while she stared right through the girl in chains. It felt as if she was suddenly suspended in the air, floating on the edge of an abyssal brink that was creeping upwards to swallow her whole. Sounds, sensations, voices…they were all…detached suddenly.

“No… No, no no no.” The words started as a whisper slipping from her lips, then they started to grow into a panicked chant, tumbling over themselves. She began to shake her head, slowly at first, then faster. Her heart skipped into double time, triple.

“Torture her.”

Heather hardly even heard Ciara’s voice through the buzzing in her ears. Fear was suffocating her senses; the fear of losing someone so dear to her simply because she knew right from wrong and refused to do the wrong. It clouded all coherent thought for all she could focus on was her dog’s lifeless body in the grass. The image was burned into her mind.

“Torture her.” The words came firmer now, cutting through time’s stand still like a hot knife.

The insistent buzzing in her head lessened though her shaking did not. Waterworks would not stop staining her face and blurring her vision. Her eyes remained locked forward and glassy to the world around her. Dulled senses faintly caught a breeze of movement to her side, then the swish of fabric. Rough hands suddenly clasped over her wrists as a darkened shape bent into her line of sight.

Reality crashed back around her like a rubber band snapped on skin, all senses suddenly heightening beyond comprehension.

Ciara’s annoyed growl grated on her nerves and made her heart skip a beat, finally forced to focus on the present as her eyes fell on a murder-filled dark green gaze. A gasp spilled from her lips as she was yanked forcefully off the floor and dragged for the door, kicking and squirming the whole way in vain against a grip too tight.

“No!” she screeched on instinct. “Mommy! Daddy!”

“Shut up.” The Dark One banged the door back open without even touching it, pulling Heather outside. “You will learn, and you will learn now.”

Terrified eyes locked with the girl’s horrified and saddened ones again, her own pleading look in them now that mirrored the girl’s only a short time ago.

“Be strong,” she whispered, reaching a weak hand toward Heather before the door slammed shut in her face.

~*~*~*~

And that is where I’m going to leave you folks for a little while, on another cliffhanger. I love my cliffhangers. *Runs* Next month I’m going to pick up with something brand new that I’ve been working on.
