Even Enough For Death (Snippet Sunday 10.2.16)

Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!

Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

Welcome to October, folks! The best time of the year in terms of Halloween and fall colors. And since Halloween is my favorite time of the year, for the month of October I’m going to be sharing from a new Halloween themed paranormal short story of mine. Embermyst is included in Victory Tales Press’ newest anthology release for the Halloween season, Paranormal Pleasures, which is out for sale in eBook and paperback format! It is also my first ever publication! Hooray!

This snippet is the introductory to the story and sets up our first main character, and our setting. If you want to see last week’s final snippet and cliffhanger of Breaking Point, you can find it here.

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

Mist hung thick and heavy in the air, blanketing the forbidden forest in a quiet solitude. The thick, vine-woven tree trunks held bare branches bent at odd angles. Moss and stones were the only things that dotted the bare landscape between them.

A single dirt road led to a stone archway in the path, the one landmark within the forest, and that was where Death was heading.

Not every soul had the ability to stumble upon it. Only those ready to move on – to either a worse fate or a better one – had the ability to see the archway. The souls in this forest either condemned themselves to a life in the Underworld or they learned how to free themselves of their earthly burdens and move on peacefully in accordance with their respective beliefs.

Most, he had learned, didn’t know how to do either.

Too many of them were stuck in their own numb rut, their ghostly white images floating aimlessly through the forest with pitiful moans and cries. Sometimes it was even enough for Death himself to feel a shiver run down his spine.

And now you’ve met Death! You’ll see more of him to come, as well as someone else next week.

Embermyst
By: Daelyn Morgana

As the God of the Afterlife, Death has grown accustomed to his dreary duty until he meets an unlikely soul: an empowered woman named Morticia. She was living with a big secret in a world full of fear before an exorcism gone wrong landed her in his realm.

Was it a twist of the Fates?

Death didn’t think so.

While she hovers between the mortal plane and the land of the dead, can he convince her of the legends of the divine, claiming she is his one perfect Mate? Or will the promise hanging around her neck cause her to return to the land of the living and the man that failed her?
