Social With Me

The impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic has officially reached me since my last post. Minimally, I’m getting a fifteen day vacation but it’s panning out like that fifteen days might be extended at least a little longer. I’m not complaining. A long vacation is actually really soulfully and mentally healing. I can focus on other things without worrying about work. Not that I’ve done too much in the last seven days thus far…

Anyways, amidst this time of “social distancing” I thought I would give a quick share of all the ways you can still follow me socially among the big ‘ole internet. Let’s stay social, six feet apart and behind screens!

This blog is my first stop for social. You can find snippets of my work, get in touch with me, and see what’s up in a slightly more formal manner. I try to post once a week. If you have WordPress account you can follow me via the sidebar prompt. If you don’t have a WordPress account you can enter an email address on the sidebar instead and get an email every time I post.

Follow WordPress

Look to the right sidebar!

Secondly, you can find me on Facebook under my author page. Most of what goes on with Facebook is chatting among writing groups and sharing of these blog posts, with the occasional other post thrown in there. I don’t utilize it as much as I probably should, but Facebook’s algorithms are a pain in the ass.

Like Facebook, you can now also find me on Twitter! I made the account last year and have meant to announce that in a more public way instead of just my sidebar announcing it, but never quite got around to it. With Twitter you can find me sharing weekly flash fiction challenges and other writing related tidbits from fellow authors, editors, and many others, a few more updates than what Facebook gets, and some other chatting. Currently, I’m doing a #StayHome #QuarantineLife adventures update each night because I gotta fill up these hours of the day somehow without the evil day job.

Lastly, and least interactive of all, you can still find me on Wattpad. Most of my free reads are now unpublished thanks to growing concerns about Wattpad’s security for authors’ rights and their stories. (See my old, old blog post for details.) But a few that I know will never go anywhere beyond where they are now are still available to read. Not that I recommend it. There’s a reason they were left on the “yeah, no, not happening” pile.

So that’s it! Those are the four places you can currently find me on the big ‘ole internet right now. Be sure to give me a follow if you feel so inclined to follow along the life of a sporadic, forgetful, dark fiction author with an evil day job that one day will find a way to make her writing her full time job.

Winner, Winner! #LoveBites2020

Life has been hard the last couple weeks. The world has gone crazy over the COVID-19 virus and stress is high. Amongst it though there are still moments of brightness, calm, and smiles. Like last week — which I definitely meant to blog about last week — when the winners of the #LoveBites2020 flash fiction blog hop challenge were released.

I woke up last Tuesday, during a glorious three day weekend for the first time in months, to an announcement that put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. I’m very much a dark writer, and Valentine’s Day is very much a light and happy holiday. So when I turned my chosen prompt of the Love Bites challenge into something darker that kills the mood I had no expectations of winning anything.

As it turned out, the judges loved my twist on the prompt and I took second place with a prize of a $5 Amazon gift card! If you want to reread my entry tale “Masks and Kisses” you can find it in my last blog post. Here’s what the judges said about my second place win, courtesy of Katheryn J. Avila’s (the host of Love Bites) blog…

Cara says: This is another entry that took the prompt and gave it a twist, though a much darker one. The public face created to endure abuse is the heartbreaking core of this “fake relationship,” and you root for the MC to find her way free. She does… bringing me to my only disappointment in this story. Though vague understanding that something has happened is there, the ending just doesn’t quite pack the punch of the rest of the story. Guess that just means you have to write more!

Siobhan says: This story was well crafted and gave all the warnings from the beginning, but how often do we ignore them in order to fit in and make others happy? A chilling tale with a rather final solution at the end that left me satisfied if not happy. Great story.

Ever says: You took the Fake Relationship trope and ran into a dark alley with it. I was blown away by how much you packed into the snapshots of time you showed us. And I genuinely cheered when what I thought was Amanda’s last moments turned out to be her Fight For Freedom! W00t w00t!

Miranda says: I loved Daelyn’s maybe due to it being closer to home for me (I witnessed that stuff as a child). I liked how she worked up to the ending, slow and steady making you read faster and faster. Great execution and never saying too much, just enough for you to know and pique your interest until the end.

Katheryn says: A great take on the prompt. The story was tense and kept me on edge until the very end. You can really feel for the narrator – her pain, her stress, and her dread. For such a brief piece, its intensity lingers long after you’ve finished reading it.

It feels a bit like a small win being as there were only five eligible tales in the running, but it is still a confidence boost for my writing. It tells me that despite my prolonged hiatus for more than a year now I haven’t completely destroyed my writing muscles. I consider that something to smile about, and something to help rekindle that fire before the Camp NaNoWriMo madness of April comes screaming around the corner.

If you want to check out who took first place you can see the winning tale and the judges’ feedback here. Quite the sweet, innocent tale took first place. A welcome change from the true love and lust of Valentine’s Day.

Many thanks to Katheryn for hosting the blog hop challenge, as well as to Cara Michaels, Siobhan Muir, Miranda Kate, and Ever Addams for their judgery! I can’t wait for the next seasonal challenge. Until then I’m going to go use that five dollars to buy myself a book and start focusing on the current contest before me.

Breaking the Fourth Wall: An Interview Hosted by K.S. Trenten and Quartz

*Knock knock knock*

Does this thing still work at all?

*Blows dust off keyboard and pages, tentatively pokes around all of Darkling Dreams’ nooks and crannies until it thrums to life*

Aha! There we go! What do you know? It still works! *Sneezes, fans away lingering dust* It’s sure been awhile though, hasn’t it? *Looks back at date of last post, cringes* April 22nd to be exact it seems. Time and life has really gotten away from me I’m afraid, and not all of it for the best sadly.

But I’m here now so I might as well make the most of it while I’m here! For however long that may be this time…

hello there

So hello dear darklings! How have you all been? Still kicking I hope. It has been a roller coaster of a few months for me but I’m not here to make excuses for myself anymore, or for my lack of consistency here. Shit happens. Hopefully I will find some semblance of balance and routine in my life but now is not that time so for now I will make the most of what I can here on this blog through my journey. One day I may be here for a bit and the next I will have fallen down the rabbit hole again for weeks, months perhaps. But on this day I am here so let’s get to the point of me being here!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like inside an author’s head? Listening to their characters babble on all day, bickering with them over plot issues and plot points, giving each other the silent treatment, wanting to throttle them for making your storyline difficult (or is that one just me?), and also loving them because they are yours and they belong only to you.

To you readers this may sound like I’ve gone off the deep end into the loony bin, but I assure you this is a normal day for us socially acceptable insane breed of people — I mean, us writers and authors.

So would you like to see a little further into the characters we breathe life into?

Well, now you have a chance at seeing one of mine break down the fourth wall with me, a fellow author, and one of her own characters as well! Myself and Matt — okay, mostly Matt because this is his show, not mine — are featured right now over on the Cauldron of Eternal Inspiration! It’s run by the lovely K.S. Trenten and her segment of monthly interviews called Secondary Characters Speak Out, hosted by none other than her dwarven sidekick Quartz.

(Is Quartz going to despise the fact I called him your sidekick, K.S.?)

For those of you that have followed along with my blog you might recognize the name Matt. It’s been a long time so even I don’t honestly remember if he ever made an appearance in my Snippet Sunday posts for Fated to Darkness, but that is the story he belongs to. And for the first time ever he’s getting a chance to speak out about his character and the series he belongs to, The Dark Heir. If you’re curious hop on over to the Cauldron of Eternal Inspiration and join the conversation with myself, Matt, K.S., and Quartz. It’s bound to give you some hints to The Dark Heir series. *Wink, wink*

A big shout out thank you to K.S. and Quartz for having us! It was loads of fun and I hope to return with another secondary character some day.

To sign off for the night I want to leave with a question. Talking and arguing with the characters in my head is something I do on a daily basis as an author — as weird as that may seem to you non-authors out there — and with fellow authors I’m comfortable with my characters tend to speak out on their own in my real conversations as well. As I write now there’s at least one of them nagging to put their two cents into this post. With posts in the future these characters might start making their voices heard through this platform and my other social media. Talking with myself, like Jeff Dunham and his crew of misfits, only it’s not with just myself in some form. As an author if I began letting their voices mingle in with my own, or if say they even decided upon their own segment of posts for news updating or something, would that be a turn off for you readers? Or would it be something you guys would enjoy seeing and would make you want to keep coming back? It is an issue I’m sure numerous authors out there want to express because to us the characters are more than just characters, but not all of the rest of the world sees them as we do. Readers and writers, I want to know what you think.

Writer of the Month: Featured by Wattpad

this is halloween

Welcome to October, Darklings!

It’s my favorite time of the year: Halloween. And no, Halloween is not just a day, it is a season.

It’s been quite awhile since I have posted anything, almost a month and a half truly. Part of that has been due to the fact I feel I have nothing to talk about, and part of that is due to the fact the day job and life has become more time consuming now that I’m working full time. If I thought I had no free time before, I certainly don’t now. I’m trying to make it work with life (trying), but that’s a topic for another day since NaNoWriMo is right around the corner.

I meant to post an update at the beginning of the month, never got around to it, and then spent several days even debating with myself back and forth if it was even worth writing this post, then another few days trying to remember how to even write a blog post.

It’s not that I’ve forgotten how to write a blog post, it’s more like I’m staring at the blank screen with no clue on how to start the post. One of those “Wut r werds?” moments. You know the writer meme, right?

wut r werds

Well anyways, I debated on even bothering with this post because…truthfully, what was the point? If the supposed reason for this post wasn’t bringing me any new views on the site I was featured on, what the hell makes me think it’s going to bring any new views from here?

I know the answer to that is more than likely none, but like a fool I’m going to post it here anyways and torture myself a bit more when I get zeros results. I’m a glutton for punishment.

So here’s the story…

Months ago. Many months ago. Before I began to be wary of some things on Wattpad, I had put an application in to one of their ambassador run profiles, Undiscovered Books, for a chance at being their featured Writer of the Month. I figured it couldn’t hurt to at least put the application in and maybe, just maybe, get a shot at drawing some more attention and readers my way.

I got no response they received the application or viewed it. Other Wattpadders were featured in the passing months. I figured I had just been passed over, like always, and gave up on that hope. Then suddenly two and a half weeks ago on September 26th — while I was at work mind you — I got an unexpected message from their profile telling me they reviewed my application (after I don’t know how long) and would like me to be October’s Writer of the Month.

Now wait. I have said before that I have given up with Wattpad, and that is mostly true. By this point I was debating taking down my stories more than usual, and the only thing I really used Wattpad for anymore was to private message roleplay with some of the friends I had made. It is also a nice place to get prompts sometimes though. So yes, I reached the point that I didn’t much care about Wattpad anymore as a writing front. But, well…

Let’s just say when I saw that message at work I may or may not have squealed in the stock room rather loudly. Who wouldn’t? It’s hard as hell to get noticed on this site. It’s a popularity contest in almost all ways, even if you aren’t really that good in writing, with favorites in fan fiction work instead of anything unique and original. So many users frequent the site that for everyone to have their works read and liked is virtually impossible. I would know, I’ve been trying for four years to gain some kind of following on that site with no success.

So to be accepted to be featured on one of their ambassador profiles is a pretty big deal. Or at least I thought it was.

I will admit I took a couple moments of debate with myself if I should even accept the offer to be Writer of the Month after everything, but the tiny part of hope in me couldn’t turn down the opportunity. So I accepted. I sent them my answers for the interview questions, revamped my Wattpad profile a little, even updated story covers and blurbs and a bit of the stories themselves. All the while thinking that for the first time this might actually bring me some new notice. Some new reads or follows or comments or likes. I wanted to look like I take writing seriously, because I do now.

October 1st came and they posted the interview with me, sent a shout out message to their followers to check me out, and what happened?

*Cricket noises*

Okay, so I did have one reader comment on the interview almost right off the bat, and I had two good friends jump straight in to read it, but other than that…

It’s been ten days and all that suppressed hope of results has essentially shattered already.

Not one story has jumped in reads. Not one new follow. Not one new hit to my page. No other comments or votes to the interview. The reads on the interview haven’t even surpassed fifty. Basically nothing resulted from this and that…hurts.

I tried not to hope for anything for this exact reason, but I couldn’t squash all that hope. I know better than expecting much. I would have been happy with just a few people interested in me or my work from the interview. But…nothing? Disappointment is a familiar friend to me.

So if it’s not bringing me any new views on Wattpad, what’s the point of posting about being featured here?

Truthfully, I don’t know. Maybe it’s a buried desire to hope someone here might like to see the interview. Or maybe I’m just grabbing at thin air now. Whatever it be, to those who would like to see the interview of me talking a little bit about myself, my writing, some advice to new writers, and some fun questions, you can find it by clicking here.

I hope you’ll check it out, and a big thank you if you do. Please do be interactive to it either here or on Wattpad, I love communicating with my followers.

(As a side note I should have another post coming out next week. I would like to start posting at least once a week since I can’t keep up with specific days anymore, and no longer do Snippet Sundays or my Shard posts. The OCD in me still wants a specific day for uniformity though, somehow…)

Embermyst: Going Out of Print Sale

For those of you who have followed my blog since mid-2016, you probably saw all my ecstatic posts about scoring my first publication with Victory Tales Press. I had entered a short story I wrote for a chance to be in their Fall/Halloween anthology and to my utter shock my story had been chosen along with three others to be published.

The anthology — titled Paranormal Pleasures — was released late September/early October in 2016. Unfortunately, my story won’t even live till its first book birthday.

Earlier this year I received word that Victory Tales Press and Publishing by Rebecca J. Vickery were going to be closing their business doors at the end of the October 2017, due to numerous reasons. I was, of course, devastated to hear this news just five months after becoming a published author for the first time. No author, no matter how long they’ve been around in the business, wants to receive a letter or email stating the agency they published with is going out of business. It was one of my biggest fears all along when I first submitted my tale.

On August 31st, all anthologies and books published by these two companies will be taken down. Ebook and print versions alike. Since that dreadful date is only a week away now all eBook versions have gone on sale for just 99 cents. That means the anthology in which I was published in is on sale now. The print version is still available to buy as well, but it is not discounted unfortunately.

To anyone who wishes to purchase a copy of this anthology with my short, Embermyst, (I will leave details about it below), now is the final time in which you can do so. To anyone who has supported my first publication, THANK YOU! I am greatly appreciative for your support. It means the world to me, and I wish this wasn’t the case now.

For those that may be interested yet, here are the details about Emberymyst and Paranormal Pleasures as a whole. You can also click here to view the page on this blog with all its information. On that page you can find an excerpt of my story as well. Should you wish a bigger peak at Embermyst, you can go back to my archives from October 2016 and click through the Sunday posts (starting on October 2nd), they will be Snippet Sunday sneak peeks to this story from its release.

Till eternity do we remain…

As the God of the Afterlife, Death has grown accustomed to his dreary duty until he meets an unlikely soul: an empowered woman named Morticia. She was living with a big secret in a world full of fear before an exorcism gone wrong landed her in his realm.

Was it a twist of the Fates?

Death didn’t think so.

While she hovers between the mortal plane and the land of the dead, can he convince her of the legends of the divine, claiming she is his one perfect Mate? Or will the promise hanging around her neck cause her to return to the land of the living and the man that failed her?

I Was Engaged (Embermyst Promotion)

Embermyst is a paranormal romance short story of legends, gods, and alternate realms all vying for perfect balance during the oppressing times of the early 1690’s witch hunts across the globe. It is part of the Paranormal Pleasures: 2016 Halloween anthology published by Victory Tales Press in October 2016 and features three other authors as well as myself.

About Paranormal Pleasures as a whole…

Victory Tales Press offers four sweet to sensual stories to stir your heart and satisfy your craving for romance. Our talented storytellers dare you to enter a world where romance dwells in the most unlikely places.

Ghost of a Chance
By: Gerald Costlow

Billy Sherritt, the only warlock born in 300 years, is now a teenager and facing some choices about his life that he doesn’t like. He unexpectedly gets sent back in time to 1640 in England, to meet the previous warlock and namesake Bill Sherritt and his sweetheart, Abigail. A Witchfinder is about to show up and the entire witch community is in danger. Billy wants to help, but he arrived as a disembodied ghost and he’s forced to stay with Bill wherever he goes.

If he can’t help this couple escape and make their way to America, his own future might be in danger. So far, he’s only managed to compound their love life. It’s hard to have a romantic rendezvous with a teenage ghost in the room.

Right Turn
By: Barbara Miller

Greg Sutton comes to Maple Grove looking for an inexpensive house since his estranged wife will end up with the current one in their divorce. His kids Eric and Kelly are not happy about the move, which will take them away from their friends, but he has to find work to take care of his children.

Lois Smith has a more desperate reason for hunting an out-of-the-way place. She is a romance author and is being stalked by a fan who wants to play out his fantasies about her. Her realtor sends her to a place in Maple Grove, a mansion in need of some tender loving care. Though Lois doubts she is at the right house, it looks like a perfect place to hide away from her stalker.

Without realizing it, the realtor sent both Greg and Lois to the same wrong place. The Mansion has secrets and wounds of its own. Will the mishap end up being the right turn in Lois and Greg’s lives?

For weeks, months now, I have tossed around the possibilities of what I can do with Embermyst from this point onwards. I am receiving my Reversion of Rights to the story, which leaves me able to take the story to another publisher, or to self-publish it. I am leaning toward taking it to another publisher, possibly Prairie Rose Publications. (They have graciously offered to take a look at the authors from VTP and PbRJV.) However, for the time being — while my focus is on editing my novel — Embermyst will be unavailable for purchase or viewing. It will one day be re-released, I just do not know when. Perhaps as a treat I will share a small piece of it around Halloween since it is a Halloween story, but that is as far as I see it right now. No matter which path I choose to go forward with, I am fairly certain the story will undergo some additional plot added to it to make it a little longer and a little better before it is resubmitted to another publisher, or self-published.

Again, I thank any from the bottom of my heart who choose to pick up a copy in its last remaining days. I also thank any who have already picked up a copy and read it. I wish these were not the circumstances of my first publication, but it is what it is. I just happened to have rotten luck in timing for this publication I suppose.

I truly want to thank my followers, readers, helpers, and cheering squad through this amazing process for their continued support. It means more than I may ever be able to fully express. And I want to thank VTP for the opportunity they provided me as an author just starting out, as well as their patience and assistance throughout the publication to make this as smooth as possible for me. I will never forget the experience.

Thank you all.

Happy Halloween, folks! A Blessed Samhain and a trickster Devil’s Nite, as well! It’s the best time of the year in terms of Halloween and fall colors, and since Halloween is my favorite time of the year, for the month of October I’m going to be sharing from a new Halloween themed paranormal short story of mine. Embermyst is included in Victory Tales Press’ newest anthology release for the Halloween season, Paranormal Pleasures, which is out for sale in eBook and paperback format! It is also my first ever publication! Hooray!

This week’s snippet picks up right where I left off in last week’s snippet, and this is also the final snippet I will be sharing from Embermyst. I’m switching to something different next month. We left off with Death asking Morticia what it is she feels toward him.

Now for the fifth and final peek at Embermyst

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

As he leaned closer, she shivered and her eyes fluttered a second, the searing orange burning brighter with excitement. “I feel…this otherworldly connection. A chill, but not the chill I would expect from Death’s presence. Instead of this wave of despair it feels like crackling lightning sparking along my limbs, jump starting my heart. It almost…feels like I belong, like I have come home.”

Death smiled more, tracing his finger down the side of her face. “You just put to words what I could not explain within myself.”

She turned her gaze to him. Her eyes were windows of awe and surprise for only a moment before she seemed torn by something. She looked down, setting the amulet amongst her skirts, then reached up to finger a chain hanging around her neck. The charm strung through it was buried between the crevice of her breast.

“What is it, Morticia?” he asked with concern at her sudden change. She looked seemingly…regretful.

“I was engaged, Death.”

~*~*~*~

And the bombshell falls… Well that could be a slight problem for this budding relationship! I wonder how Death and Morticia will get past this hitch, and if you want to find out, you’re just gonna have to read the full story.

He pulled his hand back from her face, but not before he brushed her silky black hair out of her face with a lover’s touch. “I do not know,” he admitted softly. “Do you know there is a rumor among the Gods? A legend so to speak.”

“What kind of legend?”

“It states that for all the Gods and Goddesses there is but one mortal companion who is their other half. One soul among them all that once found, and acquainted with, you are bound to for eternity. They say the mortal ascends to divinity and immortality, becoming a God or Goddess themselves. It is believed no divine being is truly whole with eternal life until they have found their Bond Mate.”

She studied him. “And you believe I am that mortal?”

“Do you have any other explanation for this feeling?” he asked, rubbing his bony thumb over her thigh. He wished he could actually feel the soft fabric beneath his fingers, wished he could feel her smooth and flawless skin. That too was another earthly charm lost on him. “Do you feel it too?”

“I do…” Her voice was a breath of a whisper.

“What do you feel?”

~*~*~*~

Yes, what does Morticia feel in regards to Death? Legends can be such tricky things, too.

Embermyst
By: Daelyn Morgana

As the God of the Afterlife, Death has grown accustomed to his dreary duty until he meets an unlikely soul: an empowered woman named Morticia. She was living with a big secret in a world full of fear before an exorcism gone wrong landed her in his realm.

Was it a twist of the Fates?

Death didn’t think so.

While she hovers between the mortal plane and the land of the dead, can he convince her of the legends of the divine, claiming she is his one perfect Mate? Or will the promise hanging around her neck cause her to return to the land of the living and the man that failed her?

An Interview and a Facebook Party

As many of you know who have been following my blog, at the end of September I had my first ever publication with Victory Tales Press for their 2016 Halloween anthology. My debut story, Embermyst, within Paranormal Pleasures has been out in the eBook and print world for almost a month now.

Through these last few weeks I’ve learned that self promoting is hard, and takes a whole hell of a lot of time and work. Of course, I’m not doing all the promoting myself, the other three authors along with VTP have been doing their own promoting as well, but it’s still hard. Even harder to actually get yourself noticed from all the work. Sometimes you want to throw your hands up and say, “what the hell is the point?”

But then you get those times where someone makes your day and you can’t stop smiling, and suddenly all that work is worth it. I’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of those moments the past few weeks.

However, the promoting never really ends, and with Halloween only 9 days away now, this is the ideal time to really push the book.

For the last four days, VTP and PbRJV have been conducting interviews with the four of us authors who contributed to Paranormal Pleasures. Earlier today, my interview went live on their blog, Once Upon A Word. If you ever wondered where I came up with the idea for Embermyst, or what my favorite paranormal book is, you can head on over to their blog to find my answers. You can also find another sneak peek excerpt from Embermyst!

If you’re interested to hear from the other three authors, you can scroll through the archives of October for the past four days and take a trip into their minds as well.

But the fun doesn’t stop there!

This coming Monday, October 24th, VTP and PbRJV will be co-hosting a Halloween Bash Facebook party to help promote the release. Myself and some of the other authors of VTP will be hosting with giveaways, snippets, and treats the whole day. One lucky trick-or-treater will even win a $40 Amazon gift card!

I will be hosting for a time frame of one hour starting at 1pm PDT (2pm MDT, 3pm CDT, and 4pm EST). If you stop by, I’ll be introducing myself, sharing a snippet or two from Embermyst, and playing some games. I will also be hosting a giveaway to one lucky U.S. participant. My prize will be a signed copy of Paranormal Pleasures (I will personalize the sign if the winner so wishes) and a handmade representation of my two main characters in Embermyst, Death and Morticia.

Hooray!

This snippet skips ahead from last week’s snippet again. The girl Death had encountered is now speaking to him and he has learned what brought her to his realm. The girl, Morticia, is now explaining the why of what happened to her after the Holy Church saw fit to purge her soul of evil. Death speaks first.

Also! Coming up on October 24th, Victory Tales Press will be holding a Halloween Bash Facebook party. Some of the authors from Paranormal Pleasures and other past authors with VTP will be co-hosting the whole day with giveaways, tricks, treats, and more! One lucky trick-or-treater will even have a chance at an Amazon gift card! I will be one of the hosts at 1pm PDT (2pm MDT, 3pm CDT, and 4pm EST) and I will have a giveaway for U.S. participants, so be sure to stop by and join the spooks.

Now for the third peek at Embermyst

(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I’m over, again. Can we just agree that my snippets will always be a little longer but not too long?)

“Who accused you? Did anyone really know the truth?”

She smiled wistfully. “Not that I know of. A few might have suspected, I believe. As for who ratted me out… Who else but the town crier looking for easy recognition? There were enough strange tales about me, as it were, that it did not take much convincing of the townsfolk to accuse me. They are foolish, really. Who else will be able to cure their ailments when they are sick, and in such a timely manner? They will regret it.”

Death chuckled. “An Herbwitch seeking revenge?”

“Oh. No. Karma will give them theirs I’m quite sure. I’m not above revenge, but I’m sure there will be retribution for their acts without dirtying my hands. Sickness will bite them in the butt like winter’s late frost and then they will see the asset they lost over blind fear of working with the Devil.” She rolled her eyes, bitterness leaking into her voice.

He was beginning to respect this woman. One hand reached over and patted hers. “Fear not that you need worry about the Devil.”

“He doesn’t even exist in my beliefs.” She flicked a hand dismissively.

“Simply because he does not exist in your beliefs, does not mean he does not exist at all.”

Morticia tilted her head. “How so, Death?”

“Do you believe in me?”

“I do. You are the bridging hand that carries the spirit and soul onwards to the next life, to be reborn again with the Goddess’ awakening. You are not one to be feared, but rather respected for the heavy weight and responsibility you carry.”

He was taken aback for a moment. The odd prickling sensation wound back through his bones, practically making him squirm. “While that is quite kind of you… Do others believe in me though?”

She took a moment to think about her answer, then started slowly, “They…believe in the concept of death, of the Grim Reaper with his scythe and the ability to cut away your soul. A night stalker to be feared for where he may choose to drop you for eternity. Not many believe in death as a just God, a bridge being as I do.”

“Precisely. Then just because you do not believe Satan exists as a being or a God, does not mean he doesn’t actually exist to others as such. It is all a concept of mind over matter. Your beliefs and views shape the Gods and beings you believe in and meet. Folklore and religions have given us deities many faces, but we do not change. We are simply us. It is the believer who changes what they see and encounter in life.”

~*~*~*~

It seems Morticia is getting a lesson, and Death has gone quite deep in his explanation.

~*~*~*~

Her form wasn’t so hazy, so strikingly white or transparent. Spots of color splashed her figure like a half finished watercolor canvas. The longer a soul was trapped here, the more they began to fade away with time.

Despite the difference in her hazy figure, she didn’t move or react to his touch. Again, unlike the rest who fled at his overwhelming presence, she just stayed there. Vacant eyes still tinged with a fiery orange color stared out from the soul’s pale face, peering into the archway as if she was waiting for something. Or someone.

His touch allowed him to see exactly how she ended up here. Images of scenes flitted across his vision in a flipbook slide show that rested upon each scene for no more than  two seconds apiece. A cross waving slowly in the air in the sign of the Father. Droplets of water splashing her brow and face, mixing with sweat. Rope bound wrists jerking against bedposts. Chanted prayer growing in volume. Screaming. Her body arching upwards and an explosion of pain. It felt like she had been ripped in half, the tether between soul and body severing carelessly as he watched her hazy image lift from her still frame. Anger and terror swept through to him from the images. He frowned, letting his hand drop from her shoulder.

The girl had been forced from her body, but why?

~*~*~*~

And so becomes the question: Who, and/or what, forced Morticia from her body? Perhaps you’ll find out next week, or you can always buy and read.
